Vision Flashcards
1
Q
Retina
A
5 different neurons: receptors, horizontal cells, bipolar cells, retinal ganglion cells
inside out arrangement: for light to reach receptors it must first pass through all 4 layers
causes two visual problems: light is distorted when it passes though retinal tissue (before the receptors), and blindsight (as there must be a gap for bundles of retinal ganglion cell axons to leave the eye)
2
Q
Cone and Rods
A
- different types of receptors
cones: photopic vision, good lighting, high acuity of detail and colour, predominant in central vision
rods: scotopic vision, dim lighting, less detail and colour, predominant in peripheral lighting
3
Q
Edges
A
the place where two different of a visual image meet
most informative feature about position of objects
lateral inhibition: when a receptor fires it inhibits its neighbours
mach bands: non-existent stripes of brightness and darkness running adjacent to edges
