Neurotransmitters and synaptic transmission Flashcards
1
Q
Synaptic transmission
A
- AP arriving at terminal buttons trigger the release of NT into synapses where they bond to receptors on the membrane of the post synaptic neuron
- NT bind to receptors which induce EPSP and IPSP
- receptors are proteins selected for a specific NT
exocytosis: the process of NT release
Nt are synthesised in the cytoplasm and are packaged in vesicles
2
Q
Neurotransmitters
A
- there are over 100
- large molecule NT: neuropeptides, synthesised in cytoplasm by ribosomes
- small molecule NT: amino acids, synthesised in cytoplasm by Golgi complexes
- NT produce either excitation of inhibition
- Amino acids: building blocks of proteins
3
Q
Effects of drugs on NT
A
antagonists:drugs that inhibit effect of NT
agonists: drugs that facilitate effect of Nt (destroy enzymes)
