VISION Flashcards
What is the meaning of ARMD?
Age-related macular degeneration
is the leading cause of blindness in adults over the age of 65
-it is a degenerative disorder of the macula that affects both central vision (scotoma) and visual acuity
ARMD
is mainly affected by this disorder, and peripheral vision remains intact
Central vision
what are the antioxidant beta-carotenoid pigments that concentrate in the eye, is associated with a lower risk of ARMD
Lutein and Zeaxanthin
-cloud the lens, decrease the amount of light able to reach the retina, and inhibit vision
-are the leading cause of blindness in the world
cataracts
it is slow and painless, and may be unilateral or bilateral
Development
is associated with optic nerve damage due to an increase in IOP ( intraocular pressure), which can ultimately lead to vision losss.
GLAUCOMA
What are the medications for glaucoma
- beta-blockers
- adrenergics
- miotics/cholinesterase inhibitors
- carbonic anhydrase inhibitors
- prostaglandin analogues
it is a microvascular disease of the eyes occurring in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes
Diabetic Retinopathy
vision loss with generalized blurring and areas of focal vision loss
