Visible Light And The Solar System Flashcards
Describe the heliocentric model
The heliocentric model was discovers by Copernicus it states that the sun is at the centre of the universe and every thing orbits it
Describe the geocentric model
The earth is at the centre of the universe and everything orbits it
How did Galileo disprove the geocentric model
He observed Jupiter’s moons and found that they were moving in the opposite direction to the other planets so they weren’t orbiting the earth therefore the geocentric model could not be true
What is wavelength
The distance from the peak of one wave to the peak of the next
What is the frequency of of a wave
How many waves pass a point per second it is measured in hertz
What is amplitude
The height of the wave from the mid point to the peak
What do waves do
They transfer energy and information whiteout transferring matter
Speed=
Frequency x wavelength
Or
V=f X lambda
Wave speed =
Distance/ time
Or v = x/t
What is a transverse wave
All types of em waves
Ripples on water
S waves
Ripples on water
Transfers waves have vibrations at 90 degrees from the direction of travel
What are longitudinal waves
Sound and ultra sound
P waves
A slinky spring
The vibrations move in the same way as the direction of travel
What is reflection
When a wave hits a boundary between to mediums some energy is reflected
It bounces off of the surface
The angle of incidence is the same as the angle of reflection
What is refraction
When waves hit a kindest between different densities they slow down this causes the wave to bend
What is a real image
The light from an object comes together to form an image on a screen
What is a virtual image
The rays are diverging so the light from the object appears to be coming from a different place
An example is a mirror or a magnifying glass
What is a converging lens
The lense is converging so it bulges outwards
When the rays pass through they move together
The focal point is where the rays all meet
What is an experiment to show focal length
Clamp a lense at one end of a track then a piece of white card further down the track
Move the card along the track until an image is focused on the card
Use a ruler to measure the distance between the lense and the card
How does distance form the lense effect the image
At 2f the image is real and upside down at 2f
Between f and 2f the image will be magnified and upside down beyond 2f
Closer that f the image will be magnified and the right way up beyond 2f on the same side of the lense
Describe a refracting telescope
There is an objective and and eyepiece lense the rays are parallel when they reach the objective lense which converges them to form a real image at the focal length the eye piece lense then magnifies the image making it look bigger to our eyes
Describe a concave mirror
An incident Ray parallel to the axis while pass through the focal point when it’s reflected
An incident ray passing through the focal point will be parallel to the axis when it is reflected
Describe a reflecting telescope
A large concave mirror collects the rays of light from an object in space
The larger mirror reflects the light into a smaller second mirror in front of the larger mirrors focal point
The smaller mirror reflects the light through a hole into the smaller mirror into the eyepiece lens and a real image is formed behind the mirror
They eyepiece lens magnifies the image
