Visible Light Flashcards
What gives opaque objects their colour
An opaque objects colour depends on which wavelength of visible light it relfects most strongly. E.g a red apple will reflect red light most strongly and absorb other waveleghts
What is an opaque object
An opaque object is an object that you cannot see-Through and that doesnt transmit light
Opaque objects only reflect and absorb light
Why do some opaque objects appear as black
Some opaque objects appear to be the colour black because they absorb all wavelengths of visible light
Why do some opaque objects appear to be white
Sone opaque object appear to be white as they reflect all wavelengths of light equally
What is specular reflection
Specular reflection is when all light rays are reflected in a single direction by a smooth surface
What is diffuse reflection
Diffuse reflection is when light rays are reflected in lots of different directions by a rough surface. This is because there are lots of different normals. This does not produce a clear image
What is white light
White light is a mixture of all of the different colours of the visible light spectrum
How do colour filters work
Colour filters work by absorbing specific wavelengths of radiation and transmitting other wavelengths.
E.g a blue colour filter would transmit the colour blue and absorb all other wavelengths of light
What do transparent and translucent objects do
Transparent and translucent objects transmit light so we can see through them
What happens if a colour filter is placed on an object not of that colour
If the object is not of the colour of the colour filter the object will appear black as the colour will not be transmitted through the filter
What light is reflected by objects that are not a primary colour
For objects that are not a primary colour either the object will transmit the wavelength of the specific colour pf light or the wavelegnths of primary colours that mix together to make that colour
