Q

Are viruses alive?

A

Up for debate. They do not reach all the required features to be classed as living. Most consider them non-living.

Q

What class of parasites are viruses?

A

They can be considered obligate parasites; they cannot reproduce outside a living cell.

Q

What is the scientific name for the ‘protein coat’? What is its general structure?

A

The capsid is made up of capsomeres which usually combine to form an icosahedral (20 sided) capsid. Glycoprotein spikes may stick out of the capsid.

Q

What are the two types of single stranded RNA viruses? How do they differ?

A

(+)ssRNA viruses: GENOME CAN ACT DIRECTLY AS mRNA.

(-)ssRNA viruses: GENOME IS COMPLEMENTARY TO mRNA.

Q

How to retroviruses replicate? What is an example of a retrovirus?

A

They replicate via a DNA intermediate.
HIV is the most infamous retrovirus.

Q

How do (+)ssRNA viruses replicate?

A

1) Enters cell
2) Viral RNA (+) strand translated
3) RNA-dependent polymerase produced
4) Makes complementary RNA to viral (-) strand

13
Q

How does HIV replicate?

A

HIV contains reverse transcriptase. Allows the virus to make a DNA copy of its genome which is integrated into a host chromosome.

16
Q

What are prions?

A

These are ‘infectious agents’ that lack DNA or RNA.

17
Q

How do prions work?

A

They are believed to be mis-folded versions of a normal cellular protein. When introduced into the brain, they cause normally folded prion protein to mis-fold too.

18
Q

What diseases are caused by prions?

A

Fatal familial insomnia.
Creutzfeld-Jakob disease.
Both affect the brain eventually leading to death. Although there isn’t a cure, prions and prion related illnesses are extremely rare. Thank god!
