Viruses Flashcards
what is a Virus
obligate intracellular parasites able to infect all living organisms.
replicates only inside the living cells of other organisms
what is the complete infective form of a virus called, what does it consist of
viron - has protein coating (capsid) surrounding a core containing the viral genome (generic material either DNA or RNA)
some virions coated by an outer lipoprotein envelope, which surrounds the protein capsid of the virus
what size range are viruses. what’s the largest virus
25-300nm. largest is the pox virus
how are viruses identified
can grow viruses in tissue culture and amplify genes by polymerase chain reaction
what do viruses look like?
either naked or enveloped with an isohedral shape
give an example of an enveloped virus and what it causes
Rhinovirus - causes the common cold
