Viruses Flashcards
Describe the crystal shaped virus
Multi-sided geometric look
Name the four shapes of viruses
Crystals, spheres, cylinders, spacecraft
Describe the sphere shaped virus
Rounded shape with small projections or bumps on the outside of the particle
Describe the cylinder shaped virus
Rod or cylinder shaped
Describe the spacecraft shaped virus
Bacteriophage viruses look like this, and the viruses in this group look like a spaceship
What is step 1 of the lytic cycle?
The virus uses its protein coat to locate an appropriate host. The virus attaches its tail fibers to the outside of the host cell
What is step 2 of the lytic cycle?
The virus then injects its genetic material (DNA&RNA) into the host cell through the host cell’s membrane
What is step 3 of the lytic cycle?
Then the viruses hereditary material takes control of the host cell and all of the host cell’s activities. The host no longer controls its own life processes. The host cell is used to make new viral particles.
What is step 4 of the lytic cycle?
Eventually the new viruses assemble and the host cell fills up with the newly formed and complete viruses
What is step 5 of the lytic cycle?
Finally the viruses burst out of the host cell each to go and attack another host cell. The above process continues until fighter cells in the host organism can stop the viral particles or until the viral particles damage and kill the organism
