Q

What is the pathology of BACTERIAL meningitis?

A

Bacterial CNS disease causing inflammation of the meninges membrane around the brain and spinal cord
Sudden onset is acute
Gradual onset is subacute

Meninges made up of: dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater

Q

Henle Kochs postulates

A

Agent present in every case of the disease by isolation in pure culture
Agent not found in cases of other diseases
Once isolated, must be capable of reproducing disease in experimental animals and be able to be recovered from that animal

13
Q

Explain the steps of gram staining

A
  1. Positively charged crystal violet binds to negative cell components
  2. Iodine forms molecular complex with crystal violet
  3. Acetone/methanol complexes dissolve colour from negative cell wall but not positive as it is thicker
  4. Red dye applied which only stains negative walls. Blue stain still present in positive cell walls

Q

Where do viruses get their replication enzymes from?

A

They carry their own replication enzymes!
