Viruses Flashcards
What kind of virus is HPV and what does it cause?
DNA non enveloped
Warts and cervical cancer
What kind of virus is hepatitis B and what does it cause?
DNA enveloped
Inflamed liver
What kind of virus is HIV and what does it cause?
RNA enveloped
AIDS
What kind of virus is hepatitis A and what does it cause?
RNA non enveloped
Liver disease
What kind of virus is polio and what does it cause?
RNA enveloped
Inflammation of spinal cord
What gram reaction do staphylococcus, streptococcus and clostridium belong to?
Positive
What gram negative bacteria is associated with recurrent lung infections in cystic fibrosis?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
What gram classification are the bacteria beginning neisseria?
Negative
What viruses must use acid fast stain?
Mycobacterium tuberculosis and mycobacterium leprae
Why do mycobacterium not undergo gram staining?
Do not retain crystal violet stain
Define infection
Multiplication or colonisation of a pathogenic microbe on/in a susceptible host with associated dysfunction/damage
What is the pathology of BACTERIAL meningitis?
Bacterial CNS disease causing inflammation of the meninges membrane around the brain and spinal cord
Sudden onset is acute
Gradual onset is subacute
Meninges made up of: dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater
Henle Kochs postulates
Agent present in every case of the disease by isolation in pure culture
Agent not found in cases of other diseases
Once isolated, must be capable of reproducing disease in experimental animals and be able to be recovered from that animal
Explain the steps of gram staining
- Positively charged crystal violet binds to negative cell components
- Iodine forms molecular complex with crystal violet
- Acetone/methanol complexes dissolve colour from negative cell wall but not positive as it is thicker
- Red dye applied which only stains negative walls. Blue stain still present in positive cell walls
What is the main replication strategy of RNA viruses?
Reverse transcriptase
