Viruses Flashcards
What are features of a Naked Virus?
- Outer protein shelled called a capsid
- RNA of DNA genome that is either single or double stranded
What are features of** Enveloped Viruses**?
- All the same as a Naked Virus
- Have an outer membrane called thr Envelope made out of a phosphalipid bilayer with embedded proteins
What are the most basic virus shapes?
- Icosahedral (almost spherical)
- Helical (rod shaped)
Where did viruses come from?
The probably originated independently multiple times during evolution and possibly via different mechanisms
What is the simplified viral life cycle?
- Attatchement
- Penetration
- Synthesis
- Assembly
- Release
**What a T4 Phage classification?
dsDNA(+/-)
What is SARS COV-2 classified as?
ssRNA(+)
How do we classify Influenza?
ssRNA(-)
What are Bacteriophages?
Double stranded linear DNA viruses with no envelope that have a complex capsid structure and are called “Bacteria eaters”
What is the difference between Lytic and Temperate Phages?
Lytic viruses kill the host while Temperate phages replicate without killing the host
What is the Lytic Bacteriophages’ Cycle?
A.K.A. T4 Phage Cycle
- Attatchement
- Injection, Degredation, and Inactivation
- Synthesis
- Self-Assembly
- Lysis
What is Early Gene Phase about?
Shutting down the host cell transcription and triggering the next phase
What is the Middle Phase about?
Making viral and phage genomes and triggering the next phase
What is the Late Phase about?
Assembling new virons and killing the host cell
