Virus' Flashcards
What does acellular mean?
Not made out of cells.
What does non-living mean?
Not alive, cannot carry out specific functions.
What does a virus contain?
Attachment proteins, lipid envelope, protein capsid, genetic material, enzymes.
What makes HIV different?
RNA instead of DNA, reverse transcriptase enzymes.
Why is HIV dangerous?
Targets T-cells of immune system, fewer immune cells to fight infection, opportunistic infections and rare form of cancer form.
Why dont antibiotics work on virus’?
Inhibit the formation of cross links in cell wall to break it down but a virus is acellular and does not have a cell wall.
Describe the process of viral replication.
attachment proteins bind to complementary receptors, nucleic acid enters cell, DNA inserted into host cells genome (reverse transcriptase convert RNA->DNA first in HIV), DNA transcribed, virus enzymes and capsid made by ribosomes, assembled by golgi and RER, released
What are attachment proteins for?
Bind to complementary receptors on host cell.
