Q

Why did Aquinas believe it was important to develop virtues ?

A

-Aquinas emphasizes the importance of practicing virtues to fulfill our purpose (telos) and achieve human flourishing, building on Aristotle’s philosophy.
-For example, prudence, or practical wisdom, enables one to reason correctly and avoid mistaking apparent goods, which may seem desirable but lead to sin, for real goods that fulfill our divine purpose

What were Aquinas’ theological virtues?

A

-He distinguishes between the Cardinal Virtues, which are cultivated through human effort, and the Theological Virtues, which are gifts of God’s grace. -Among these, Aquinas views the theological virtues—faith, hope, and love—as central to morality, as they orient humans toward God and eternal life. -The Church affirms this, stating, “The theological virtues are the foundation of Christianity.”
