Virgil Section 3 Flashcards
Incesus et ipse perfurit ac multam in medio sine nomine plebem, Fadumque Herbesumque subit Rhoetumque Abarimque ignaros; Rhoetum vigilantem et cuncta videntem, sed magnum metuens se post cratera tegebat [342-346]
He himself too, in a blazing frenzy and in the middle of a great crowd without a name, went for Fadus and Herbesus, and Rhoetus and Arbaris, though they were unaware, except for Rhoetus who was awake and saw everything, but hid himself behind a large bowl in fear
Impastus ceu plena leo per ovilla turbans (suadet enim vesana fames) manditque trahitque molle pecus mutumque metu, fremit ore cruento: nec minor Euryali caedes; [339-342]
Even so a ravenous lion causing havoc among packed sheepfolds (for its mad hunger urges it on) mauls and drags the delicate flock, silent with fear, and roars with its bloody mouth. No less was the slaughter of Euryalus;
Pectore in adverso totum cui comminus ensem condidit adsurgenti et multa more recepit purpurem: [347-349]
Euryalus buried his whole sword close up in his enemy’s chest just as he was getting up, and withdrew it, crimson and dripping with death
Vomit ille animam et cum sanguine mixta vina refert moriens, hic furto fervidus instat. Iamque ad Messapi socios tendebat; [349-351]
Rhoetus vomited up his life and, as he died, brought up wine mixed with blood, while Euryalus hotly pressed on his stealthy course. And now he was heading for the companions of Messapus:
Ibi ignem deficere extremum et religatos rite videbat carpere gramen equos: breviter cum talia Nisus (sensit enim nimia caede atque cupidine ferri) “absistamus,” ait, “nam lux inimica propinquat. Poenarum exhaustum satis est, via facta per hostes” [351-356]
There he saw the last fires dying away and the horses, dutifully tethered, cropping the grass, when Nisus briefly spoke thus (for he realised they were being carried away by excessive lust for slaughter): “Let us cease, for our enemy the dawn is drawing close. Enough vengeance has been satisfied and a path made through the enemy”
