Viral structure Flashcards

1
Q

Why are viruses not considered prokaryotes or eukaryotes

A

they lack any of the characteristics of living things, except
the ability to replicate which they accomplish only in other living cells

Q

What is the structure of the virus? (2)

A

1-Nucleic acid ( RNA or DNA)

2-The capside is a protein coat that functions as a shell to protect the viral DNA/RNA. during the infection attaches the virus to receptors on the host cell

cannot live independently

infect host cells and replicate their DNA

take over a cells translation and transcription

Q

How does an virus infect an animal cell?(3)

what is the process called?

A

Surface attachment proteins bind to specific
cell receptors

Fuse with plasma membrane

Invaginates plasma membrane to form a
vesicle inside the cell
