Prokaryotic Cell Structure Flashcards
What is a prokaryote? and example of one
a single-celled organism without a nucleus and they do not have membrane-bound organelles
bacteria
What’s the function of flagella and whats the number of flagella a bacteria can have
?
its is used for locomotion (movement)
they can have several or one flagella
What’s the function of the plasma membrane?
Controls entry/exit of materials
What’s the function of the cell wall?(3)
Support
protection
maintains the cells shape
What’s the function of the capsule?
Protection and adhesion to other prokaryotes
What’s the function of the ribosomes?
Production of proteins
What’s the function of the nucleoid
?
The region containing the majority of D.N.A.
What’s the function of the pilus/pilli?
movement, but are more often involved in adherence to surfaces.
What’s different about the DNA in prokaryotes?
its contained in an area in the cell called the nucleoid, its not surrounded by nuclear membrane
also some contain plasmids
What the difference between eukaryotic and prokaryotic ribosomes
the prokaryotic ribosome has 70S ribosomes
eukaryotic contain 80S
What is the prokaryotic cell wall made of and where is it located?
peptidoglycan, under the capsule
What are the common shaped bacterial shapes
1-Cocci
2-Bacillus(rod-shaped)
3-Spiral
Spirillum (rigid helix)
Spirochete (flexible helix)
4-Vibrios (comma shaped)
