High fever
Coryza, cough, conjunctivitis (3 c’s)
Koplik;s spots
Rubeola
Measles complications
Pneumonia (kills most)
Diarrhea
CNS - enceph, SSPE
Multinucleated giant cells
Measles
Mild exanthematous disease the resembles measles
Children often escape this infection
Very bad for fetus - esp in 1st trimester
Rubella
Can cause congenital rubella syndrome (cariac defects, eyeball defects, hearing loss)
2 unique properties of herpes simplex virus:
- Capacity to invade and replicate in CNS
2. Ability to establish latent infections
Shallow vesicles on erythematous base
Ballooning pathology, vesicles crust over painfully
Enlarged fused cells on Tzanck smear
HSV
Retrograde transport of virus thru sensory neurons and ultimate infection of the DORSAL ROOT GANGLIA (virus remains latent).
HSV
Virus that infects thru conjunctiva or resp tract mucosa
Replicates in regional lymph nodes, primary viremia 4-6 days after infxn
Replicates in liver and spleen to generate secondary viremia that coincides with rash 10-14 days after infection
Chicken pox
(Varicella zoster virus)
- Pt most contagious 1-2 days before rash and 4-5 days after
- Prodrome in older kids and adults
Sequence of fever followed by rose colored rash
-Fever 2-5 days
Roseola Infantum
human herpes virus 6 or 6th disease
Prodromal illness of several days w/ mild sx
Then slapped cheek rash
Parvovirus B19
Fifth Disease, erythema infectiosum
HPV 6 and 11
ano-genital warts
HPV 16 and 18
Cervical dysplasia
