What is acute bronchitis?
-Chest infection usually self-limiting
=Inflammation of trachea and major bronchi so oedematous large airway and sputum
-Cough may persist
Presentation of acute bronchitis
-Cough
-Sore throat
-Rhinorrhoea
-Wheeze
-Low-grade fever
Investigations of acute bronchitis
-Clinical
-CRP to guide antibiotics
Management of acute bronchitis
-Analgesia
-Fluid intake
-Antibiotics if systemically very unwell, pre-existing co-morbidities, CRP >100
=Doxycycline/ amox
Presentation of influenza
-Coryza
-Nasal discharge
-Cough
-Fever
-GI symptoms
-Headache
-Malaise, myalgia, arthralgia
-Photophobias, conjunctivitis, lacrimation and pain upon eye movement
-Sore throat.
Complicated= LRTI, CNS involvement
Investigations of Infleunza
Laboratory testing- viral nasal or throat swabs for PCR
Management of influenza
Adequate fluid and rest/ antivirals (oseltamivir/ zanamivir)
