Viral Hepatitis Flashcards
What are causes of hepatitis?
Viral, drugs, alcohol
Define viral hepatitis.
Viral infection and inflammation of the liver. May be self limiting or progress to cirrhosis.
Describe the transmission and chronicity of the types of viral hepatitis.
Which areas of the world have a higher rate of viral hepatitis.
List RFs for Hepatitis A,E,B,C
Describe the pathophysiology of viral hep. Include the symptom timeline.
What is the incubation period of HAV, HBV, HCV?
What are the early symptoms of viral hep?
What symptoms can a patient at the icteric phase of viral hep experience?
List all the Symptoms of Viral Hep
What is a pathomneumonic finding of hep C? Describe it.
What are the exam findings in a case of viral hep.
porphyria cutanea tarda - small erythematous erosion on the dorsum of the hand.
What does this image show?
Cryoglobulinemia
What does the following show:
1. big arrows
2. small arrow
- porphyria cutanea tarda
- bullae (blister)
Hep B Serology:
1. What are the 3 antigens expressed? What do they suggest?
3 Antigens (Hep B Antigen):
Surface:
1. HBsAg
If positive → Indicates infection or just the vaccine.
2. B/w Core + Surface: HBeAg
Positive during replication → Indicates infectivity.
3. Core: HBcAg
Core antigen is not in the blood → Considered useless in testing.
Hep B Serology:
1. What are the 3 antibodies expressed? What do they suggest?
3 Antibodies:
HBsAb
Indicates immune response to infection (or vaccine).
“How to tell?” - Can differentiate post-infection or vaccination.
HBeAb
Response of the body.
Positive in inactive chronic infection or immunity following acute infection.
HBcAb
IgM → Positive in acute or during chronic infection.
IgG:
→If positive and HBsAg is negative → Indicates past infection.
→ If positive and HBsAg is positive → Indicates chronic infection.
What does HBV DNA indicate?
HBV DNA:
Direct count of viral DNA copies.
Indicates active replication or chronic infection.
Describe the preventative measures for viral hep.
Outline the management of acute viral hep.
Indications for antiviral therapy for hep B. when is transplant therapy indicated?
Outline the management of chronic viral hep.
Outline the FULL management of viral hep.
What are the complications of viral hep?
Which type of viral hepatitis carries an increased risk of fulminant liver failure?
Which has the least risk?
HDV most
HAV least
Which types of viral hepatitis carries an increased risk of chronic infection? which type has a higher tx effectiveness rate.
HBV
HCV (80% chronic but 99% tx success rate)
