Viral, Bacterial and Protist disease examples Flashcards
Name three Viral diseases:
TMV (Tobacco Mosaic Virus)
HIV
Measles
Measles:
Symptoms: Fever and red skin rash
Transmitted by: inhaling sneeze or cough droplets from a person infected with the virus
Can be controlled by vaccinating as a child
If not treated it can be fatal
HIV:
Symptoms: Flu-like illness
Transmitted through sexual contact and exchanging bodily substances
The virus attacks the immune system and all its cells and when the immune system becomes badly damaged the person is no longer able to fight back illness and disease and can cause the person to get ill and not recover.
Can be controlled by antiretroviral drugs
TMV (Tobacco mosaic virus):
Symptoms: Mosaic black pattern
Transmission: Enter through wounds in the epidermal layer of the leaves
Can be controlled by removing infected leaves and pests
Name the two types of Bacterial diseases:
Gonorrhea
Salmonella
Salmonella
Symptoms: fever, nausea vomiting, abdominal pains
Spread by eating uncooked food or food that has been prepared in unhygienic conditions
It can be controlled by improving food hygiene, vaccinating poultry, and cooking food properly
Gonorrhea
Symptoms: Pain when urinating and green discharge in the penis or vagina
Spreads through sexual contact (having unprotected sex)
It can be controlled by antibiotics (penicillin) because it is a bacterial disease but the bacteria can become resistant
Name a protist disease
Malaria
Malaria:
Symptoms: Recurring episodes of fever which can be fatal
Transmission: The mosquito(vector) carries the infected blood from one animal and infects another animal with the protest when feeding from the person
Controlled by preventing the breeding of mosquitoes (destroying still-water lakes) or the use of mosquito nets
