Monoclonal Antibodies Flashcards
1
Q
What are antibodies?
A
Antibodies are produced by white blood cells and help fight diseases in the body by binding themselves to foreign materials (antigens) to destroy them.
2
Q
What type of white blood cell is used to make monoclonal antibodies?
A
B-Lymphocytes
3
Q
What are Monoclonal antibodies?
A
Clones of single white blood cells

Q
Process of making Monoclonal antibodies:
A
- A pathogen injected into a mouse triggers an immune response where B-lymphocytes are able to produce identical antibodies to target specific antigens but they cannot divide easily
- Tumour cells cannot produce antibodies but they can divide easily.
- The B-Lymphocyte is bonded with the tumor cell to create a hybridoma.
- The Hybridomas can divide easily and create identical antibodies to unique antigens
- They are cloned, collected, and purified.
