A

S.237(2) outlines the defence against Blackmail

If the the defendant can show that they were entitled to obtain the benefit or to cause the loss and that the making of the threat was a reasonable and proper means for obtaining the benefit or causing the loss.

It will then be up to the Judge or Jury to determine whether the means were reasonable and proper.
