What are the three stages of the Cycle of Abuse?
Tension-Building Phase, Acute Battering Episode, and Calm/Loving Period
Tension-Building Phase
Minor acts of battering. The woman tries to accommodate the abuse and withdraws as a means of protection. Tries to calm the perpetrator, tends to fail
Acute Battering Episode
The explosion of severe abuse
Calm/Loving Period
Abuser asks for forgiveness and the victim tries to change the abuser. This explains why people tend to stay in a violent relationship, tend to hope for the better.
Two Types of Harassment
Quid Pro Quo & Hostile Environment

- Means “this for that”
- Tends to happen between two people of differing positions (boss –> employee)
Hostile Environment
The person is faced with a hostile or intimidating work environment
- Tends to happen between people of equal position, like coworkers
