The Future Flashcards
Male as Normative
Tend to view males and male issues as the standard, and women and women’s issues as the abnormal.
Ex). Using men as the basis for studies and applying the results to women. Using the schema of symptoms of heart disease found in men and applying it to women.
Women are not a Monolithic Group
Women are diverse (differences in ethnicity, age, education, marital status…etc…) and have diverse responses to health challenges
Interaction of Social and Political Change
One can lead to the other; sometimes one can’t happen without the other.
Ex). The Affordable Care Act came about from the work of people nationwide regardless of their political party
Affordable Health Care Act
Aka “Obamacare”. It is comprehensive health insurance reforms that widely expanded access to healthcare diagnostic procedures, treatment, and preventive care. This now forced insurance to cover contraception, pap smears, mammograms, treatment for depression, etc.
Women’s Health Initiative

Extreme doses of hormones that have been given to women for decades have caused higher rates of breast cancer, heart disease, etc
Breast Cancer

Women’s Coping

Diversity of women
Gender, gender identity, biological sex, race ethnicity, social class, how we were raised, belief system, responses, age, sexuality, relationship status, children, etc
