Violence Flashcards
Othello about Desdemona. Having been convinced of Desdemona’s disloyalty, Othello’s true violent and aggressive nature is revealed. His threat of physical violence is visceral and thoroughly believable. Shakespeare feeds into the prejudice stereotype that black people are aggressive and violent. Exclamation mark amplifies his sincerity and furiosity.
'’I’ll tear her all to pieces!’’
Repetition accentuates Othello’s loss of the eloquent speech he exercised at the beginning of the play, the fall of the tragic hero is evident here. Elongated vowel.
'’O’ blood, blood, blood!’’
Mixture of egotism and savagery, Othello gives into Iago’s influence. Extreme violence. This line occurs when Lodovico arrives in Cyprus. Lodovico represents the Venetian state and shows the civilised world’s disturbed reaction to Othello’s barbaric treatment of his wife. Othello’s star has fallen and he is becoming increasingly isolated by Iago and his jealousy. Onomatopoeia, exclamation mark.
'’I will chop her into messes! Cuckold me!’’
Othello strikes Desdemona , displacing his anger because his superiors have ordered him to return to Venice and leave Cassio in charge in Cyprus.Desdemona says that she is glad to be returning home which angers Othello.
’‘(striking her) Devil!’’
