Vineyard Establishment Flashcards
Site Selection
Factors include climate, slope, aspect, ease of access to the vineyard site, proximity to vineyard, DOC laws will be determined based on the style, quality and price of wine
Terroir
French word meaning land. It is an overarching concept that describes that the distinctiveness of quality wines is due to their sense of place.
Soil Preparation
Main topics to address are drainage and structure of the soil, it’s mineral composition and the presence of pests or unwanted pests or unwanted plants. In some cases the topography of the vineyard maybe modified. Better to fix the problem at this stage than later.
Young Vines
Up to approximately 5 years old typical produce relatively low yields because their root system is not fully established. Between 10-40 years is when they are most productive.
Old Vines
Typically greater than 50 years may well remain profitable in expensive vineyards like burgundy or Bordeaux where people pay a premium price for quality wine. Doesn’t do well in inexpensive areas where cheaper higher quality wine is the desire.
Rootstock 110R and 140R
Drought Tolerant because they develop deep roots.
V Riparia and Riparia Gloire rootstock
Tolerant to water logged soil so do well in high rainfall areas and water retaining soils
Rootstock 99R and and 110R
High tolerance to acidic soils.
Rootstock 420A and 3309C
Low vigour rootstock which does well in cool climates.
