Who was Giap?
-The leader of communist forces in the North of Vietnam
-In 1950 he had an army of over 100,000 men
What happened in March 1954?
Giap won a victory for Ho Chi Minh at DIEN BIEN PHU.
How many men besieged Dien Bien Phu
60,000 men with 200 heavy artillery guns
What happened as a result of the Dien Bien Phu attack?
-A peace deal between the French and the North - the GENEVA AGREEMENT.
-Vietnam was divided at the 17th parallel and France left
Who ruled South Vietnam after 1954?
Ngo Dinh Diem. He was supported by Eisenhower but was very corrupt and unpopular
Why did Eisenhower support Diem?
Because he felt if Vietnam fell to communism, so would neighbouring countries - Domino Theory
What was founded by Ho Chi Minh in 1960?
The Viet Cong. This was to fight Diem in the south and were responsible for fighting the ARVN
What were “safe villages”?
Patrolled villages to prevent peasants from joining the Vietcong
Why did Diem clash with Buddhists?
Because of his strong Catholic beliefs
When and why did the self immolation happen?
11th June 1963. A monk set himself on fire in protest to ARVN attacks on Buddhists.
What did Diem ban that caused an outcry?
Buddhist flags
What happened on the 2nd November 1963?
Diem was assassinated. Kennedy did not stop it
Who took over after Kennedy and what did he vow to do?
Johnson. He vowed to complete what Kennedy had started - prevent Domino Theory in Asia
