In 1949 , the chinese communist party , led by mao zedong succesfully won a war in china and established a communist government.
What two major developments did this bring for events in vietnam?
Mao supported the vietminh by providing them with essential millitary supplies such as artillary.
The usa switched their support to the french fearing that communism was going to sweep across asia.
In 1950 truman agreed to send the french $15mn of supplies and military advisors who were under strict instructions to not fight.
Ultimately the usa paid about 80% of the cost of france’s war with vietnam.
Describe the events at the battle of Dien bien phu .
In 1954 , the french decided to fortisy Dien bien phu in order to lure the vietminh into battle.
The french waited with around 15,000 troops for the vietminh to attack.
They didn’t know that they were surrounded by 50,000 vietminh with anti-aircraft guns to shoot don french supply planes and other artillary which they had spent months getting into the mountains.
After 2 moneths the french surrendered.
After another two months an armistace was signed andthe french agreed to leave indochina.
Only 3000 french troops survived.
Why did president eisenhower not send military to help the french in vietnam?
The usa had just ended a war with korea , with 34000 american lives lost and nothing gained, eisenhower thought congreess were very unlikely to send in troops.
What was stated in the geneva accords?
1) vietnam was to be temporarily divided along the 17th parallel, seperated by a demilitarised zone.
2) Ho Chi Minh would run the northern part ( democratic republic of vietnam )
3) Bao Dai would run the southern part (state of vietnam)
however he soon went to france and was succeeded by diem who was anti communist
4) Vietnamese troops and people could move north or south for 300 days after the agreement
5) In july 1956, elections would be held across both parts of vietnam to decide on the government of a united vietnam
Which countries refused to sign the geneva accords and why ?
Usa and south vietnam because they felt that ho chi minh was likely to win an election and they could not consent to the spread of communism.

Why did diems government lack support?
There were still many communists in south vietnam, they controlled some northern areas.
Diem was catholic ; most vietnamese were buddhist , religious clashes were common and buddhists assumed diem favoured the catholics.
Diem mainly gave government jobs to his family members and catholics.

What was the Ho Chi Minh trail ?
A series of dirt paths and smaller trails that north vietnam used to send troops and supplies to support the vietcong in south vietnam
What was the national liberation front and what did they do ?
1960
The vietcong and other anti-diem groups joined to form the national liberation front.
It organised political opposition to diem .
members would go to villages at night and urge villagers to disobey the government and support local vietcong groups.
How succesful were the national liberation front?
Very succesful.
By the end of the 1960s, less than half of south vietnam was under government control .
