Acrocyanosis
A condition in which an infant has blue extremities but pink face and trunk.
Cyanotic defect

Ductus venosus
A blood vessel that exists only during fetal development and closes to become a hepatic ligament following birth.
Hypoplasia
The most rare and severe cardiac defect, which occurs when the right or left ventricle fails to develop adequately, leaving that side of the heart unable to pump blood.
Obstruction defects
Cardiac defects in which cardiac vessels or valves are excessively narrow or blocked.
Patent ductus arteriosus
A failure of the ductus arteriosis to close.
Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)
A condition in which infants typically have labored respirations that use accessory muscles and are accompanied by retractions, flaring of nostrils, and audible grunting at the end of exhalation. RDS is a life-threatening condition requiring skilled medical intervention.
Retractions
A condition in which the chest surface is pulled inward during inspiration
Septal defects
Defects where there is an opening in the wall between two chambers of the heart, allowing backflow between the chambers, reducing the efficiency of the heart.
Septum primum
A valve that prevents blood backflow to the right atrium
