DVI connector:
High quality connection used with LCD displays. Partially compatible with HDMI.
The different types of DVI are:
DVI-D: digital only DVI-A: analog only DVI-I: digital and analog DVI-DL: Dual Link M1-DA: digital, analog, and USB
HDMI connector:
Used mainly or high definition television. Can carry audio and video signals.
The difference types of HDMI are:
Type A: Supports all HD modes, compatible with DVI-D connectors
Type B: Double-video bandwidth, supports higher resolutions
Type C: Mini-HDMI, used in portable devices
Type D: Micro-HDMI, smallest connector, also uses in portable devices
DisplayPort connector:
Royalty free interface similar to HDMI.
Used packet transmission similar to Ethernet.
Connector looks similar to USB.
Not as common as DVI and HDMI.
S-Video connector:
Used for standard definition video, no audio signal. Uses a mini-DIN 4, 6, 7, or 9 pin connector.
Component/RGB connector:
Used to send analog or digital signal over three wires: red, green, and blue.
How many pins are on the power connectors for PCIe cards?
6 or 8 pins
Steps for troubleshooting video issues:
- Check connections.
- Power cycle the computer, display, and any power protection equipment.
- Check for an onboard video setting in the BIOS me make sure it is disabled if installing a new card.
- Resolution setting.
- Check the driver.
- Check the version of DirectX. Use the dxdiag tool.
- Check the temperature threshold of the video card.
- Use software to check and repair stuck or dead pixels.
- Calibrate the monitor
- Check for newly installed applications.
- Check inside the computer.
What is a flat panel display that consists of two sheets of polarizing material surrounding a layer of liquid crystal solution?
LCD.
They are TFT active matrix displays.
They use a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) as the lighting source.
What is the best way to clean an LCD?
Spray isopropyl alcohol and water mixture onto a lint free cloth and then clean the screen.
What monitor uses light emitting diodes to display images?
LED.
What monitor uses organic light emitting diodes?
OLED.
The main advantage of OLED over LED is the cost.
What display is rarely used as a monitor but mostly in TVs that uses plasma?
Plasma.
They are known for brightness and low luminance black level. It is a higher energy consumer than LCDs.
What older type of monitor uses a cathode ray tube?
CRT.
What can be plugged into a computer’s external video port to project the computer’s video display to a projection screen?
Video projector.
It is measured in lumens.
What are programs that enable the operating system to communicate with the actual device?
Device drivers
Two rules for video driver issues are:
Use the manufacturer’s driver. Access the manufacturer’s website and download the latest driver.
Watch out for new operating systems. Verify that the device is compatible with the new operating system.
To work with video drivers:
Open Device Manager, expand Display Adapters category. Right clicks the device and select Properties, then select the Driver tab.
If a driver fails and the system does not display anything on the screen:
Press F8 during startup and boot into Enable Low Resolution Video or Enable VGA Mode, or boot into Safe Mode.
