Sherman Anti-Trust Act (1890)
Created as a measure of regulating the economy - resisting inflation & deflation of economy (WRONG TO MONOPOLIZE TRADE).
Clayton Act
Add on of Sherman.
- Eliminates unions from being considered as monopolies.
- Illegal to regulate peaceful strikes, picketing, and boycotts.
- Illegal for one person to be director of 2 competing companies.
Consumer Credit Protection Act (1986)
Limits how much a singular creditor can take from a paycheck.
Copeland Anti-Kickback Act (1934)
Prohibits fed contractors & subcontractors from making employees give up wages for benefit of keeping their job.
Copyright Act (1976)
Protection of copyrighted work.
- HR: when using copyrighted materials for training/other uses, make sure all material used is owned by the company.
Davis-Bacon Act (1931)
Fair wages, benefits, and overtime (prevailing wages)
Applies to laborers & mechanics.
- Federal contract law.
Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (2010)
Basically handcuffs for CEO’s and C-Level execs. - holds them accountable financially.
Economic Growth & Tax Relief Reconciliation Act (2001)
EGTRRA
- Reduces rates tax of those who pay individual income taxes.
Electronic Communications Privacy Act (1986)
ECPA
- Wiretap & Stored Communication Act.
- Includes rules for access, use, disclosure, interpretation, and privacy communications.
- HR must give out notice for monitoring calls - subject to observation and recordings.
Employee Polygraph Protection Act (1988)
EPPA
- Changed use of polygraph to fed employees & anyone in interstate commerce.
- Not allowed in most private companies.
- Many states prohibit it & specific guidelines must be followed if they do use it.
Employee Retirement Income Security Act (1974)
ERISA
- Mandatory standards for private health & pension plans offered by an employee.
- Specifies what they can and cannot do.
Equal Pay Act (1963)
EPA
No discrimination of pay based gender.
FAA Modernization & Reform Act (2012)

Fair & Accurate Credit Transaction Act (2003)
FACT
- Credit & background checks.
- Provides one free credit check yearly.
Fair Credit Reporting Act (1970-2011)
Regulate user credit information - have to put in writing if credit used for making employment decision & must obtain written authorization to do so.
