what is the victorian law reform commission
- it is an independent law reform organisation that reviews, researches and make recommendations to the state parliament
what is the main role of VLRC?
to assist the government is continuing to provide a fair, inclusive and accessible legal system by investifating the need for change
describe 4 other roles of VLRC.
major inquiry - examine and report on any proposals by the vic attorney general and make recommendations for law reform.
community inquiry - investigate minor issues that are of general concern within the community and telling attorney general with suggestions for law reform
monitoring - to monitor and coordinate law reform activity and make suggestions to attorney general.
education - delivering programs to help inform the community about what they do.

strengths of the VLRC
- vic government will be more willing to act on VLRC report as they ask the VLRC to investigate the need for law
- VLRC can investigate comprehensively so the government can intiate new legislation that covers a whole issue
- VLRC can remain objective and unbiased as it is independent
weaknesses of VLRC
- investigations can be time consuming (e.g. 12-24 months)
- vic parliament is not compelled to support or adopt VLRC recommendations
- VLRC is limited by how many projects that can undertake at a time and can only initiate investigations without reference is it will not consume too may resources, making its ability to investigate issues without a reference from the attorney general limited.
