Vibrio Flashcards
What are the characteristics of vibrio?
curved rod
like alkaline media
oxidase positive
sucrose fermentator
What is the epidemic serotype of vibrio cholrae?
O1-serotype
O-O139
Where does cholrae come from?
indian continent
How many chromosomes does cholarae have?
one big chromosome
one small one
What transmits cholera?
cross contamination of food and water
eating seafood raw, they can be in seafood esherary
what is an infectious does of cholera?
10^9
it is very acid sensitive, stomach acid kills it
What disease does cholera cause?
watery diahrrea
non invasive
colonize on surface then produce chilera toxin- binds to cells of mucosa epithelium
What are the subunits of cholera toxin?
two A subunits-enzamatically-adp robosyl
five B subunits-the subunits that bind
What is the meachanism of the a subunit of choera toxin?
the ADP ribosylation of a cellular G protein which regulates the activity of the cellular enzyme adenylate cyclase. This leads to overproduction of cyclic AMP and derangement of ion transport. The elevated levels of cyclic AMP in the mucosal cells of the small intestine cause a cascade that results in hypersecretion of chloride and bicarbonate into the intestinal lumen, and hence a net osmotic efflux of water.
How to fight against cholera?
fluid electrolyte replacement
What is a cholera cot?
catching cholera stools and measuring fluid lost and the re[lacing the same volume
What is vibrio parahaemolyticus is associated with?
food borne disease associated with seafood- lives in seawater andbrackish water
has a type 3 secretion system
What are the symptoms ofvibrio parahaemolyticu?
explosive diarhea and it is self limiting
non bloody
Vibrio vulnificus?
virulent species of Vibrio which causes rapidly progressive wound infections after exposure to contaminated seawater, as well as septicemia following ingestion of raw oysters
