Q

What is the difference on how winds are reported on ASOS/AWOS versus METARs?

A

Winds on the AWOS/ASOS are reported in degrees magnetic (like runways). Winds on METARs (including ADS-B) are in degrees true.

Q

What is the proper phraseology at a non-towered airport before you taxi?

A

Raleigh Exec Traffic, Cirrus 803P, at the south ramp, taxi to runway 3, Raleigh Exec.

NOTE: ALL runway crossings MUST be announced before crossing them enroute to the departure end of the runway. Also, a truncated N-number is acceptable, so long as it uniquely identified you. “Skyhawk” might be better than “Cessna” because a Cessna can be a two-seat trainer or a 12-person jet. Even “Yellow Cub” of “Blue Low-wing” is OK if you’re the only aircraft around fitting that description.

Q

What does a star beside the CT frequency on the Sectional Chart mean?

A

The control tower is part-time and, after hours it will become a non-towered airport. If the CTAF symbol (C inside a black ball) is immediately after the CT frequency, that is also the CTAF frequency after hours.

A

Since Phoenix is Class B, after talking to Clearance Delivery…

PILOT: Phoenix Ground, Cirrus 803P, at Cutter Aviation with Information Bravo. Request intersection departure at H7.

CONTROLLER: Cirrus 803P, readback correct. Advise this frequency when ready to taxi.

NOTE: This is essentially the same as departing a Class C or TRSA, except you will be given a clearance to fly in the Class B airspace rather than just departure instructions.

20
Q

What does “Monitor Ground” on taxi at Class B mean?

A

Sometimes at a Class B, Clearance Delivery will say “monitor ground” when you tell them you’re ready to taxi. You will tune to ground, taxi up to the edge of the non-movement area, and then wait for instructions. They will call you when ready. It will go like this:

PILOT (on 121.65): Boston Clearance, Cirrus 803P at Signature with Information Hotel, Ready to taxi.

23
Q

What does the controller mean when they say “contact ground point niner”?

A

Ground frequencies are almost always 121.x, with x being any number. So, the controller means for you to tune 121.9. The 121 part is understood and many times not mentioned.

24

What is the proper phraseology to request taxi to parking after landing at a towered airport?

A

TOWER CONTROLLER: Cirrus 803P, turn left at M, cross runway 28L at M, contact Ground point niner.

PILOT: Fayetteville Tower, Cirrus 803P, holding short Runway 4 (add intersection if applicable), VFR to the north.

TOWER CONTROLLER: Cirrus 803P, Fayetteville Tower. Wind 320 @ 15. Fly heading 070, Runway 4, cleared for takeoff.

PILOT: Climb and maintain 3,500. Cirrus 803P.

27
Q

What instructions from the Ground Controller can you expect at a busy Class B airport after the taxi to the departure runway?

A

The ground controller will usually say “monitor Tower on xyz frequency”. That means do not report ready for takeoff like at a Class D or Class C or TSRA. Tower will query you when ready, frequently with a “line up and wait” instruction.

28
Q

When at a busy Class B airport, when should the run-up be performed?

A

While still on the ramp (non-movement area) as you may not get another chance. Some busy airports have a run-up area near the runway(s), but they are rare.

29
Q

What is the proper phraseology for the entire takeoff sequence at a busy Class B?

A

…near the end of the taxi sequence…

GROUND CONTROLLER: Cirrus 803P, monitor Tower on 128.8.

PILOT: Tower on 128.8, Cirrus 803P.

…while listening to tower..not calling them…

30
Q

What is the secret word to get an amended clearance?

A

Unable.

31
Q

What symbol denotes being able to receive HIWAS over the VOR frequency?

A

An H in a bubble in the VOR block.

32
Q

What is the universal frequency to contact Flight Service?

A

122.2 (you usually need to be above 5,000 AGL.

33
Q

How do you utilize the VOR data block to contact Flight Service?

A

A Flight Service Station can be reached by using the VOR data block. The FSS name is in the bracket below the data block. There will be a frequency above the data block. That frequency is for transmitting to the FSS and for listening to their reply. However, if there is a “R” after the frequency, that means the FSS can only listen on that frequency. The pilot will need to tune the VOR frequency, press the NAV button and turn up the volume to listen to the FSS attendant.

34
Q

What can you use FSS for?

A

Getting updated weather, opening/closing a flight plan, providing PIREPs, making VFR position reports (useful when on VFR flight plans over open/rugged terrain to update your position for SAR).
