What is an unauthorised veterinary medicine?

A

An unlicensed medicine that does not have a MA and is not eligible for the exemption through the SAES. It can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon under the cascade. This includes any human medicine used for animals.

  1. Name, address, telephone number, qualification, reg number and signature of the prescriber if Sch 2 or 3 CD’s have been prescribed.
  2. Name and address of the owner
  3. Identification and species of the animal and address (if different from owner)

  5. Name quantity, dose and administration instructions
  6. Any necessary warnings and the withdrawal period
  7. Where appropriate, a statement saying its prescribed under veterinary cascade
  8. If repeatbale, the number of times it can be repeated

    Human: Standardised forms are required for Sch 2/3
  2. Veterinarian Rx’s should be retained for 5 years and not submitted to the relevant NHS agency
    Original human private prescriptions for Sch 2/3 CD’s should be submitted to the relevant NHS agency
  3. Vet: It is good practice to not prescribe more than 28 days with of treatment unless long term ongoing issue e.g. epilepsy
    Human: Maximum quantity should not exceed 30 days for schedule 2/3 or 4.
  4. Vet: must have reg number of prescriber for sch 2 /3
    Human: Must have prescriber identification number for sch 2/3

What is important to know about the sale of veterinary medicines?

A

It is unlawful to sell or supply unauthorised veterinary medicines including human medicines such as GSL and P medicines for an animal unless this takes place under the veterinary cascade.
This includes if a veterinary surgeon has told an owner to purchase an OTC human product from the pharmacy.

  2. Advise on any application warnings and contraindications on the packaging or label
  3. Be satisfied that the recipient intends to use the medication correctly and is competent to do so
  4. Prescribe or supply the minimum quantity required for treatment
