What is a NFA-VPS
A category of medicine for non-food animals that can be supplied by a veterinary surgeon , a pharmacist or a suitable qualified person. A written prescription is not required. These medicines should not be accessible by the public in a pharmacy
What is a POM-V
Prescription only medicines that can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and supplied by a veterinary surgeon or pharmacist with a written prescription
What is a POM-VPS
Prescription only medicine that can be prescribed and supplied by a veterinary surgeon, a pharmacist or a suitable qualified person on an oral or written prescription. A written prescription is only required if the supplier is not the prescriber
what is AVM-GSL
An authorised veterinary product that is available on general sale.
What are exempt medicines under schedule 6 of the veterinary medicines regulations - exemptions for small pet animals
an unlicensed veterinary medicine that does not require a marketing authorisation because it meets criteria laid out in schedule 6 of the veterinary medicines regulations- exemptions for SPA
What is an unauthorised veterinary medicine?
An unlicensed medicine that does not have a MA and is not eligible for the exemption through the SAES. It can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon under the cascade. This includes any human medicine used for animals.
What are the 9 requirements for veterinary medicines?
- Name, address, telephone number, qualification, reg number and signature of the prescriber if Sch 2 or 3 CD’s have been prescribed.
- Name and address of the owner
- Identification and species of the animal and address (if different from owner)
- Date
- Name quantity, dose and administration instructions
- Any necessary warnings and the withdrawal period
- Where appropriate, a statement saying its prescribed under veterinary cascade
- If repeatbale, the number of times it can be repeated
What must be on Schedule 2 or 3 CD prescriptions for animals?
The item has been prescribed for an animal or herd under the care of the veterinarian

6 months - all repeats must be used by then

What are the differences between human and veterinarian CD prescriptions?
- Animal: standardised forms are not required for Sch2/3
Human: Standardised forms are required for Sch 2/3 - Veterinarian Rx’s should be retained for 5 years and not submitted to the relevant NHS agency
Original human private prescriptions for Sch 2/3 CD’s should be submitted to the relevant NHS agency - Vet: It is good practice to not prescribe more than 28 days with of treatment unless long term ongoing issue e.g. epilepsy
Human: Maximum quantity should not exceed 30 days for schedule 2/3 or 4. - Vet: must have reg number of prescriber for sch 2 /3
Human: Must have prescriber identification number for sch 2/3
WHat are the similarities between human and veterinarian CD prescriptions?
Both valid for 28 days
Usual CD prescription requirement (total quantities in word and figures etc)
What is the veterinary cascade
An exemption within the regulations that when a veterinary medicine is not available, another medicine can be considered
What is the ideal number 1 choice for veterinary cascade?
Supple a veterinary medicine with a GB or Uk wide marketing authorisation for the species and condition is indicated
What is the number 2 choice?
A veterinary medicine with a NI marketing authorisation for the species and condition indicated can be supplied
What is the number 3 choice?
A GB, NI or UK wide veterinary medicine licensed for another species or different condition can be considered
