A

Veterinary surgeon, pharmacy and SQP can prescribe. Can either be oral or written prescription. Only oral if prescriber is supplier. Veterinary surgeon, pharmacist and SQP (registered with AMTRA) can supply

SAES (small animal exemption scheme)

A

Allows exemption from marketing authority. No restrictions on retail sale and supply of these medicines. Active ingredient must not contain antibiotics, narcotics or psychotropic substances.

Written veterinary prescription must include:

A

Name, address and telephone number of prescriber, qualifications of the prescriber and their signature, stamp of veterinary surgeon, date of Rx, name and address of owner/ keeper, identification and species of animal, where animal lives, name and quantity of product prescribed, dosage and administration instructions, warnings, withdrawal period if relevant, statement if prescribed under the cascade

For CD 2 or 3:

A

The prescriber must be in the UK, RCVS registration number must be included. Form and strength of preparation as well as total quantity IN WORDS AND FIGURES. Declaration must be written to say the CD is prescribed for animal/ herd under the vet’s care. The name and address of the person who the CD is being delivered to should be recorded. These cannot be repeated but can be given in instalments

A

Valid for 28 days. Any other drug is valid for 6 months or shorter

Prescribing under the cascade

A
  1. Supply a licensed veterinary medicine (GSL or P)
  2. An existing licensed veterinary medicine for another species or different condition can be considered
  3. A licensed human medicine or an EU- licensed veterinary medicine can be considered
  4. Extemporaneous prepared medicine by RPh, a vet surgeon or holder of an appropriate manufactures license

Record keeping

A

Records must be kept for POM-V and POM-VPS. Must be kept for at least 5 years. Must include: date of supply, name of VMP, batch no, quantity received or supplied, if there is a written Rx then name and address of prescriber and copy of Rx

Audit

A

Legally at least once a year, every person entitled to supply a POM-V or POM-VPS must carry out a detailed audit.
