Supplementary prescribing
Voluntary partnership between independent prescriber e.g. doctor or dentist and a supplementary prescriber to implement an agreed patient specific clinical management plan (CMP). Supplementary prescribers include nurses, optometrists, radiographers, pharmacists (complete GPhC accredited programme)
Independent prescribing
Prescribing by a practitioner who is responsible and accountable for the assessment of patients with conditions
What can be prescribed?
Private Rx, CD, off label medication, unlicensed medication, veterinary Rxs (POM-VPS). For CDs, independent prescribers need home office license for medications to treat addiction and supplementary prescribers cannot prescribe for addiction
Ethics
Respect for autonomy (self determination and ability to make decisions), beneficence (acts in way to benefit patient), non maleficence (avoid harm)
