What is the bacterium that causes TB in wildlife?
Mycobacterium bovis
Why is M bovis an important pathogen?
Can infect humans through unpasteurized milk.
Different to M. Tubercurlosis
What are the two types of host in tb?
Spillover host- Can still be infectious to others
-Infection is sporadic or can only persist if external sources of infection are present
Maintenance host- May or may not be a reservoir host.
-Infection can persist via horizontal transmission in the absence of any other source of infection
What three techniques can you use to diagnose that the disease is Tb? in the meerkats?
Serology (pcr)
T cell test (two prick test and compare)
culture (partially dangerous)
What type of lesion is Tb?
It is usually a multifocal pyogranulomatous inflammation.
What are the two types of law?
Criminal law and civil law.
Name a law involved in animal cruelty?
Unnecessary suffering is the main clause. Can kill but if the animal suffered it s breaking the law.
Animals are property
cannot abandon an animal without reasonable cause.
What are you looking for to see if the animal suffered?
Into the brain. In particular, damage to the cerebrum not just the cns, brain stem, sinus frontal lobus etc as this wouldnt kill it. Which is seen in some cases.
Rope marks
Clawing
Any lesions which look suspicious, haemorrhage in particular.
Are traps and snares allowed to be used?
Yes, as long as the animal didnt suffer. If the snare accidently got caught around some other part and was neglected with the animal then the owner of the snare is liable.
Shooting injuries. What is defined by and what is illegal when shooting?
E=1/2 (M/v)(2)
.22 illegal for larger animals like deer as this would not kill htem instantly.
What is under the owners legal responsibility?
Conduct and standards
ignorance
ultimate responsibility
ownership and legal duty.
They at the end of the day have all this under them and it is them that have to abide by this. no one else.
