What are the 4 classes of Vet Medicine
POM-V
POM - VPS (vet, pharma, suitably qualified person)
NFA - VPS (non food animals; vet, pharma, suiabtly qualified person)
AVM - GSL an authorised vet med

When is written prescription required?
POM-V
When can an ‘oral prescription’ be used?
*Same person that prescribes, supplies. Recorded but no need legally for an Rx
POM-VPS
For POM-V and POM-VPS what prescriptions are needed?
Written and oral prescriptions
Who can write a script and/or supply a medicine that is POM-V?
Pharmacist can supply, veterinary prescriber
Who can supply POM-VPS?
Vet, pharma or suitable qualified person
What page are the requirements for a script?
p94 MEP Telephone no. Species of the animal As directed is not acceptable Relevant warnings with animals for food -> withdrawal of the drug before slaughter
When dealing with Controlled Drugs what are the regulations?
Same regulations as humans but no need for standard form, declaration that the Tx is for an animal or herd under prescribers care.
Rx forms are kept for 5 years
Maximum of 28 days Tx can be prescribed (humans = 30)
Registration number RCVS needed
What is the Prescribing Cascade and when is it used?
A licensed vet medicine must be supplied where available and clinically appropriate.
When products are not available then a VMP licensed in the UK for another species or a different indication can be used.
When this is not possible then a UK licensed human medicine or authorised VMP in another EU state can be given.
Final option is extemporaneous or specials products may be used.
When are labels on products legally required?
Only when cascaded medicines
What information is required on labels?
Name of prescriber Name/address of owner ID including animal species Expiry date Withdrawal period where relevant 'For animal treatment only'
What are the do’s and don’ts of Sale and Supply in Pharmacy?
Must not sell unlicensed medicines (must be licensed for animals and under vets advice)
POM-VPS and NFA-VPS; advise on safe use, warnings, satisfied that user is competent, supply minimum quantity for treatment
What records need to be kept?
Record receipt and supply of POM-V and VPS
Date (of supply and receipt)
Name and quantity of VMP
Batch number
Name and address of supplier and recipient
Name and address of prescriber if written prescription
FIVE YEARS
Annual audit by suppliers entitles to supply POMs
