Vestibular System Flashcards
1
Q
Two organs of the vestibular labyrinth
A
Semicircular canals- crista
- sensitive to hear rotation
- angular acceleration
- hair cells
Otolithic organs- saccule & utricle
- gravity/ tilt of head
- linear acceleration
- hair cells
2
Q
Differences between cochlear hair cells and vestibular hair cells
A
- Kinocillium - adjacent hair cell that runs along the top of the tallest hair cell
- ## Orientation- vestibular hairs are not all orientated in the same directionAre largely similar however
3
Q
Role of semicircular canal- crista
A
Head rotation
4
Q
Role of otoliths organs
A
Gravity/ tilt of head Linear acceleration (a lift starting)
5
Q
What is the orientation of the organs of the vestibular labyrinth
A
Utricle- horizontal
Saccule- vertical
6
Q
How is head movement detected
A
- Gravity pulls otoliths either towards or away from kinocillium
- Differential orientation means some hyperpoalrise some depolarise
- Change in rate of nerve firing
7
Q
What are the two vestibular nuclei
A
- Medial- limb motor neurones and cerebellum
2. Lateral- extraoccular motor neurones and neck motorneurones
