Vestibular Junk Balancing Flashcards
What is the sixth sense?
vestibular
what are the two parts of the of vestibular system?
Peripheral sensory apparatus- the labyrinth Central pathways
Where are vestibular end organs located relative to the cochlea
posterior and lateral
what are bony cavities filled with / contain?
perilymph and contain membranous sacs with endolymph
Semicircular canals (3) what do they do?
detect angular head acceleration - Anterior (Superior) - Posterior (Inferior) - Lateral (Horizontal)
Otolith organs (2) what do they do?
-detect linear head acceleration - Utricle - Saccule
What are the two unnamed structures?
Big = Utricle
Small = Saccule
Crista ampullaris
The sensory sheet within the ampulla, containing hair cells and supporting cells.
What hair structures determine polarization?
many stereocilia (St) and a single kinocilium (Ki)
how do you depolarize the hair cells
Displacement of the stereocilia bundle toward the kinocilium results in hair cell depolarization.
how far off of horizontal is the lateral loop?
30 degrees up
Purpose of the Saccule and uticle
saccule = verticle
Utricle = horizontal
What are sensory sheets of the otolith organs called?
maculae –Otolithic Membrane (OM) is a gelatinous membrane covered by otoconia (OT) - calcium carbonate crystals that make the membrane heavier
Scarpa’s ganglion
The vestibular nerve arises from bipolar neurons that innervate the semicircular canals and otolith organ
The vestibular nuclei (4)
Superior
Inferior
Medial
