Vessel Histology Flashcards
What are the different types of vessels?
Arteries Arterioles Capillaries Veins Venules Lymphatic vessels
What are the properties and function of arteries?
Large, thick walls, small lumen (deal with large pressure)
-Take blood away from the heart, get progressively smaller away from the heart
What are the properties and function of veins?
Large, thin walls, some have valves, big lumen (deal with low pressure)
-Take blood to the heart and get progressively larger towards to the heart
What are the properties and function of lymphatic vessels?
Thin walls, contain valves
-They drain extracelllar fluid from tissues
What are the properties and function of capillaries?
Small vessels with extremely thin walls
-Site of exchange
What are arterioles?
A small branch of an artery leading to a capillary
-Get progressively smaller away from the heart
What are venules?
A small vein, collecting blood from capillaries
-Get progressively larger towards the heart
What are the 3 layers in the universal structure of vessels ?
Tunica intima (internal) Tunica media (middle) Tunica adventitia (external)
What does the tunica intima consist of in vessels?
- Single layer of squamous endothelial cells (endothelium)
- Endothelium sits on a basal lamina
- Contains internal elastic lamina (arteries)
What does the tunica media consist of in vessels?
Contains circular smooth muscles and elastin
What does the tunica adventitia consist of in vessels?
Contains collagen, longitudinal smooth muscle, and vaso vasorum
What are vaso vasorum?
A network of small blood vessels that supply the walls of large blood vessels
