Framed by the novellas protogonist’s Anna and Luke, a couple navigating through their trauma of the loss of ‘the boy’, Lohrey explores the collective difficulties surrounding their wellbeing, by presenting a dynamic sea change which serves as a catalyst in uncovering their compromises and the paradoxical parallels of city and coastal lifestyles.

This is explored through Amanda Lohrey’s novella ‘Vertigo’ (2009) where she uses characterisation to demonstrate the protagonists’ turmoil surrounding their relationship with themselves, eachother, and their environment.
