Para 3 Flashcards
PARA 3: Topic sentence
Section three, opens with a dramatic shift in Anna and Luke’s relationship, as they are forced to unite to confront the near-death experience that profoundly transformed their ‘fractured’ relationship
PARA 3: TVAVA 1
As the fire approaches the small township of Garra Nalla, creeping in “like a release of octopus ink,” it adds to the couple’s disorientation within their surroundings, heightening a sense of isolation—especially for Anna. The once abstract presence of “the boy” is now manifested in the tangible, all-encompassing threat of the fire. This moment underscores the paradox between renewal and destruction (ANS Q).
PARA 3: TVAVA 2
This collective step toward reconciliation enables the couple to reunite in order to overcome their shared traumatic experience, as highlighted through “When she lifts the sweater, the coverlet is seared with a brown scorch mark.” The destruction of the sweater culminates in a powerful and symbolic moment for both Anna and Luke, as it was the final item that connected Luke to the boy and in its destruction it also provided salvation and an opportunity for renewal.
PARA 3: TVAVA 3
Lastly, Anna’s decision to ‘go off the pill’ symbolises her acceptance of her loss and her readiness to embrace renewal, this highlighted through her poignant memory of her, Luke and the boy canoeing across the lagoon in the novel’s climax which carries with it a powerful sense of catharsis and closure
