CHAIN OF COMMAND
The line of authority that vertically links all persons with successively higher levels of management.
Delegation
The act of assigning part of a manager’s activities to subordinates.
Responsibility
The obligation of a subordinate to perform assigned duties.
Authority
The power to act and make decisions in carrying out assignments.
Accountability
Employees must answer to their superiors for the quality and performance of the work that has been delegated to them and accept any criticism or credit for their performance.
DELEGATION AND EMPOWERMENT
- A common management failure is unwillingness to delegate.
- Delegation leads to empowerment.
- Organizing trend is that managers are delegating more and finding more ways to empower people at all levels.
SPAN OF CONTROL
- The number of persons directly reporting to a manager.
- Can have a Narrow or Wide span of control.

The manager supervises fewer employees
Wide Span of control
The manager supervises many direct reports
