Vertebrates Flashcards
Vertebrates
chordates with a backbone and encased brain/skull, contains seven classes
Agnatha
jawless fish, lampreys
Chondrichthyes
cartilaginous fish, sharks, rays
Osteichthyes
bony fish, most numerous and diverse of the vertebrates
Amphibia
amphibians, arose from fish
Reptilia
arose from amphibians, first to not be dependent of standing water, cerebral cortex began to enlarge
Aves
birds, arose from dinosaurs, only vertebrates with feathers
Mammalia
evolved from reptiles, vertebrates with hair and mammary glands
Therapsids
reptiles that mammals evolved from approximately 225 mya
Asteroid
crashed into earth around 65mya, size of Mt, Everest (9 miles wide), impact probably caused global broiling, atmospheric debris may have blocked sunlight for months, cooling the earth, all land animals bigger than dogs became extinct, mammal species exploded to take over the niches from the extinct dinosaurs
First to come into abundance after the asteroid
ferns because they prefer shade
Monotremes
egg laying mammals
Marsupials
mammals with a pouch
Placental
mammals where embryonic development occurs in the uterus
New trait found in mammals following extinction of dinosaurs
extended period of care and training of offspring to allow for flexible behavior to be learned that is appropriate to changing environment
