Vertebral column Flashcards
How many vertebrae in back?
33 (+/- one)
What are the two kyphoses?
Thoracic and sacral
What are the two lordoses?
Cervical and lumbar
How do primary kyphoses concave?
Anterioly
How do secondary lordoses concave?
Posteriorly
Do secondary or primary curves offer the most movement
Secondary
Function of curves in the back?
Extra flexibility and shock absorbing resilience
What is kyphosis- common causes?
Humpback: increased thoracic curvature
Erosion/ fracture of anterior part of one or more vertebrae
What is lordosis- common cause?
Hollow back: anterior rotation of pelvis leads to increased lumbar curvature
Obesity, late pregnancy, weakened trunk muscles
What is scoliosis- common causes?
Abnormal lateral curvature
Developmental defects, assymetric muscle strength, poor posture, idiopathic
What is flat back syndrome
Pelvis tilts backwards, pulling back flat
Causes of flat back syndrome
Hamstrings tight, hip flexors weak
How does vertebral body change down the body
Gets larger
What forms vertebral/ neural arch?
Left and right pedicles meet 2 laminae
What does vertebral arch form?
Vertebral foramen
