Synovial fluid Flashcards
How thick is synoviol membrane
1-3 cells thick
Function of type A and type B synoviocytes?
A= bone marow derived macrophage B= fibroblast like connective tissue cell
Is there a basement membrane between synoviocytes and subintima?
Nah m8
What does subintima contain
Dense network of fenestrated capillaies
What is synovial fluid?
Ultrafiltrate of blood with added hyaluronic acid
How do normal, oestoarthritis and rhumatoid athritis samples of synovial fluid appear
Normal= clear and colourless OA= yellow/ orange and clear RA= yellow/ orange and cloudy
Function of synovial fluid
Nourishes articular cartilage
Forms reserve volume
Distributes force across joint surfaces
Reduces friction between cartilages
How does synovial fluid behaviour differ at rest and with movement
At rest it gels
With movement is less viscous
What is lubrican?
A water soluble glycoprotein
Produced by chondrocytes and synoviocytes
Function of lubrican
Repels joint surfaces, prevents contact of articular surfaces
Why is it important that synovial fluid provides articular cartilage with nutrients?
AC is avascular and aneural
Components of articular cartilage
Collagen type 2
GAGS and proteglycans
Describe layers of articular cartilage from top to bottom
Superficial layer (flat chondrocytes) Middle zone Deep zone (round chondrocytes) (TIDE MARK) Calcified zone Subchondral zone
What are proteoglycans
Core protein with one or more covalently attached glycosaminoglycan chain
What is the major proteglycan in cartilage?
Aggrecan
