Vertebrae Flashcards
superior surface is concave b/w adjacent (uncinate) processes
body of C3-C6
small & wider from side to side than anteroposteriorly
vertebral body of C3-C6
vertebral foramen is large and triangular
C3-C6
contain anterior & posterior tubercles on transverse processes
C3-C6
direction of articular processes of C3-C6
articular processes
- superior facets directed superoposteriorly
- inferior facets directed inferolaterally
named by way they are
spinous processes of C3-C7
spinous processes
- C3-C5 short and bifid (split in two parts) - process of C6 is long but that of C7 is longer (vertebra prominens)
Describe atlas
- no spinous processes or body
- consists of two lateral masses connected by anterior & posterior arches
strongest cervical vertebrae
C2
distinguishing feature of C2
distinguishing feature is the dens, which projects superiorly from its body & provides a pivot around which atlas turns & carries cranium
One MAJOR distinguishing feature of Cervical vertebrae
uncinate process
body of thoracic vert
body:
- heart-shaped (contains heart)
- bears one or two costal facets for articulation w the head of rib
vertebral foramen of thoracic vertebrae
vertebral foramen:
- circular & smaller than those in cervical & lumbar region
transverse processes of thoracic vert. articulate with the ribs
- those of T1-T10 have transverse costal facets for articulation with tubercle of rib
- T & T = transverse costal facets for
articular facets of thoracic vertebrae face
- superior articular facets directed posteriorly & slightly laterally
- inferior articular facets directed anteriorly & slightly medially
*vertically
transverse processes of thoracic vert.
transverse processes
- long & strong - extend posterolaterally - length diminishes from T1-T12 - those of T1-T10 have transverse costal facets for articulation with tubercle of rib - T & T = transverse costal facets for
