TMJ kinesis II Flashcards
What 3 structures do the articular disc attach?
1) medial & lateral poles of condyle
2) anterior joint capsule
3) lateral pterygoid muscle
What to structures limit posterior translation of the TMJ joint?
anterior joint capsule & lateral pterygoid muscle (articular disc attaches to them) during closing
Motion TMJ depression
1) condyle anterior rolls/spins on inferior disc
2) articular eminence glides anteriorly on superior disc
what are the two structures that make up the bilaminar retrodiscal tissue?
superior lamina & inferior lamina
function of superior lamina during opening & closing
- opening: allows disc to translate anteriorly -> disc glides forward c lateral pterygoid & superior lamina allows for anterior translation
- closing: assists repositioning of disc back into resting position
therefore: superior lamina facilitates movement
Function of inferior lamina
limits forward translation
Joint capsule: loose vs. strong
loose: anteriorly***, medially, posteriorly
strong: laterally
Where is the joint capsule most likely to dislocate?
anteriorly (that’s why we need the extra support of inferior lamina that resists anterior translation)
Articular disc displacement
articular disc subluxes beyond articular eminence
- result: disc displacement c or s reduction
