Vernacular architecture and design Flashcards
How are older buildings designed to withstand weather conditions in comparison to newer buildings?
Old massive structure buildings were used to create thermal mass in order to withstand environmental conditions
New buildings are composed of thinner layers that are individually less able to withstand the weather conditions
What are the main climatic zones?
- Hot-dry
Hot- arid - temperate
- cold
- Hot-humid
How to avoid heat gain in hot climates?
Motivate natural ventilation (breeze) when cooling is desired
admit light in sufficient amounts for task lighting
How to conserve heat in cold climates?
avoid severe wind speeds and problems
keep out excessive or unnecessary light
What are 6 design treatments used to overcome the challenges different climate characteristics create?
- Urban form/relation between buildings
- orientation
- form
- air permeability
- openings
- local materials
